The Navy used the lighthouse during World War II and it became climbable for the public about a decade ago. The Outer Banks icon is one of the last of its kind. Check-in and reservations are made through the Mount Airy Hampton Inn and include the Hampton Inn continental breakfast.

He’s happy to snap your photo and share a little southern hospitality. While we realize that many thousands of people around the country are mourning his passing, we Roanoke Islanders know that we have lost a part of our island's culture. In 2002 Griffith had a North Carolina highway named after him - The Andy Griffith Parkway, U.S. 52, in Mt. Airy.

When it was over, I walked 4 blocks back to Heart and Soul, and made myself a cup of tea. A good meal, good music, a nice walk, and a cup of tea. Mostly a breakfast and lunch place, Barney’s offers two dinner specials.

As my friends told their stories and we rolled across the dream-drifting sound where Andy spent many of his happiest hours, the island’s barefoot legend was coming alive. The North Carolina native and comedic actor who played TV sheriff Andy Taylor made his home in Manteo. Townspeople, who shared his belief in supporting flawed friends without judgment, embraced him. Griffith’s childhood buddy and lifelong friend Emmett Forest collected Andy Griffith memorabilia his entire life. Treasures include items from The Andy Griffith Show, Matlock, movies, Broadway, comedy albums, and articles about Griffith’s many charitable ventures.

Years later, he met his third wife through the colony, the one who would be with him until the end. Andy was a chronic practical joker, once conning a local friend toward eating a horse-manure sandwich disguised as a hamburger. He jokingly tossed around words like “fag” but quietly stood up against religious leaders who preached against gay marriage because they hurt some of Andy’s closest friends who are gay. Andy often said he was not Taylor, nowhere near as good as him, although there were parts of him in that character that, tellingly, bears his first name. In thousands of interviews, he sprinkled clues about his true self, sometimes speaking candidly about his artistic struggles and self-doubt.

He will even take your picture sitting in Floyd’s chair, with your camera. I thought bubble gum and candy cigarettes were outlawed long ago. But, seein’ how I was just a stone’s throw from Winston-Salem, home to the R.J. Reynolds tobacco empire, in a time warp, and in a candy store named after the son of the town Sherriff, make believe cigarettes are still available at Opie’s candy store. How to take care of family, love thy neighbor, treat friends and strangers with warmth, help someone in need, and look for the good in people. The show taught us that every problem has a solution, and solving those problems is best done with a sense of humor.

Greene also recalled that the house was “nicely furnished with art antiques and memorabilia that reminded him of his hometown,” Mt. Airy. It is his understanding that Griffith would have enjoyed seeing his house be turned into a museum. “A lot of people in the community are keeping their fingers crossed that she will not tear it down,” he said. There are many Andy Griffith ed items to see and you really have to stop at aunt B’s restaurant, the food is fantastic.

County officials and friends confirmed the permit is to demolish a smaller house along the Roanoke Sound that Griffith bought in the 1950s, not the larger house that he and Cindi built nearby several years ago. Say thank you to Emmett Forrest, Andy Griffith’s childhood friend. He curated the treasure-trove of memorabilia found in the Andy Griffith Museum. The 1st Mayberry attraction we visited was Walker’s Soda Fountain. It’s the counterpart to Walker’s Drugstore from the show. He and Cindi made occasional appearances at The Lost Colony and were longtime supporters of the show.

But Manteo, with its old courthouse anchoring downtown streets surrounded by modest businesses and cozy homes, was close on the town setting. The islanders accepted him and gave him the sense of belonging he had long sought, damaged by being called “white trash” by a fourth-grade female classmate in his hometown, Mount Airy, in the North Carolina foothills. He was an only child with loving and supportive parents, a mother who taught him to love music and a father whom Andy said was a natural comedian in his own right. After leaving the states in 2016, we noticed the difference in pace instantly. My husband and I joked that it is as if they are living on ‘island time’ in Portugal, even though it is not an island. And though there are times that can be frustrating, for the most part we find that we have adjusted to a slower, more peaceful pace of life.

Local Favorites

Just as Presley is buried at Graceland, Griffith is buried on the large piece of property he owned on the North Carolina coast. It was not immediately clear how far Griffith's grave is from his older house or the newer one. Della Basnight of Manteo, whose family was friends with Griffith since she was a child, said she understood that Cindi Griffith had the right to do whatever she wanted with the property. William Ivey Long, the Tony Award-winning costume designer whose parents were friends with Griffith and his first wife, Barbara, said Griffith told him in 2007 that he wanted to preserve the older home as a museum. The two discussed the possibility when Long had an exhibit of his costumes at the Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, Long said. The main house includes a sweeping foyer, a billiard room, and a den with a wet bar. Additionally, there is also a marvelous master bedroom ensuite. This southern colonial mansion is located in Toluca Lake, CA. Toluca Lake is a neighborhood in Los Angeles, CA. The iconic actor, producer, writer, director and southern gospel singer lived here until his death in 2012. His former homes in Toluca Lake are both featured on this site. What an amazing experience staying at the home place of my idol growing up watching on TV.

My favorite part of the tour was the opportunity to chat with two local ladies who were docents during my visit. There is no better way to learn what is really going on in a town that to chat with the locals. The Jefferson Davis Smith Family was the sole owner of the Gertrude Smith House, built in 1903. The house is on the National Register of Historic Places, thus adding to the historic value of my trip. Jefferson Davis Smith operated the local general store, owned several farms and numerous rental properties.

Settings included the streets of Manteo, the Green Dolphin Pub and Waterside Theatre, home of The Lost Colony. The Outer Banks' most famous resident, Griffith lived a very private life on 70 acres on the outskirts of Manteo. He wasn't extremely visible in the community and only a few trusted locals made it beyond his gated driveway, but we knew he was here.

We visited the world’s largest open face white granite quarry. It seems Andy Griffith wasn’t the only prosperous resident of Mt. Airy. Named after Episode 18 in Season 3, where Sheriff Andy and Deputy Barney discover a local goat has eaten a case of dynamite, this pub is relatively new to the Mayberry scene. Griffith wanted the museum to include items from his TV shows, along with memorabilia from his music career, Long said.
